La Parroquia is an iconic restaurant with origins dating back to the early 1800's in the Mexican state of Veracruz. The original locale, El Gran Café de la Parroquia , became notorious for their impeccable quality of coffee and the tradition of serving their signature drink, Café Lechero. It was the pioneer of 'cool' coffee shops and today has evolved to much more than that; there is a popular phrase in Mexico that says "Going to Veracruz and not stopping at Cafe de la Parroquia is like not having been to Veracruz at all".
La Parroquia de Veracruz now has several restaurants not only in Veracruz but also in Mexico State and Mexico City. The brand has diligently been cared for and passed down for generations, conserving its famous recipes throughout its franchises. La Parroquia principally serves rich coffee and sweet breads but the menu also includes typical Mexican fares from Veracruz and a fusion of Cuban and Spanish food.
Mexico City visitors can have a taste of authentic Veracruz without actually visiting the state. The newest restaurant is located right in Mexico's City Centro Historico, across from the Metropolitan Cathedral. Highly anticipated for months, visitors were lined up out the door when the restaurant first opened in 2013 waiting for their chances to have their senses captivated with the rich aroma of good coffee.
When visiting La Parroquia it is a must to participate in the Cafe Lechero Tradition, "El Tintineo". Café Lechero translates into coffee with milk, and while there is nothing unordinary about coffee with milk, the presentation is what makes it so special. When ordering a Café Lechero, the waiter will bring a glass partly filled with strong coffee and promptly leave the table. When ready for the milk, you must clink your spoon against the glass which in return echoes throughout the room and signals the waiter that you're ready for a large kettle of milk to be artfully poured into your glass! Sounds a little foolish, but that is the tradition! The custom originated from a trolly driver who used to ring his bell when approaching the restaurant to let the waiters knew he was coming.
The Mexico City La Parroquia de Veracruz restaurant is located at Brasil #5, Col. Centro between Tacuba and Donceles. It is open from Monday through Sunday 7:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m.
