The city of Chichen Itza may have had the most diverse population in the Maya world, a factor that could have contributed to the collapse of the city by the end of the Terminal Classic period.

Today, the site is home to a number of architectural styles, from what is considered the height of Maya art in the Northern Maya lowlands, to Puuc and Chenes styles from the western and northern Maya lowlands.

The name "Chichen Itza" means "At the mouth of the well of the Itza." This derives from chi', meaning "mouth" or "edge," and ch'en or ch'een, meaning "well." Itzá is the name of an ethnic-lineage group that gain political and economic dominance of central Petén Itzá in the Late Classic period (c. AD 600–900).

One of the first references to Chichen Itza occurs in the 11th century text known as "The Dynastic History of the Maya" which was written by a scribe at Chichen Itza. In the text, Chichen Itza is mentioned several times as being under the political control of different rulers at various points in time. The earliest date given for the city's founding is around AD 325. However, one of its earliest occupations dates around AD 750, and by 900 it was firmly under Maya rule.

There are a few cenotes on the site, which provided water for the ancient Maya. The north side of the site faces a shallow lake known as "Lake Chenes" which is believed to have been part of a larger system that included other lakes such as Lake Quexil and Lake Xochimalco.

The largest of the cenotes, Cenote Sagrado or "Sacred Cenote", is located to the north of the main site. According to post-Conquest sources, pre-Columbian Maya sacrificed human beings and objects into the cenote as a form of worship to the Maya rain god Chaac. Edward Herbert Thompson dredged the Cenote Sagrado from 1904 to 1910, and recovered artifacts including gold, jade, pottery, and incense burners. A recent study suggests that the quantity of material dedicated to Chaac is evidence for his importance to the Maya.
