Learn about Chicxulub

The Chicxulub Crater is an impact crater that is buried underneath the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico. It is thought to be the result of a large asteroid or comet that struck the Earth around 65 million years ago, and is widely believed to have been responsible for the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event, which resulted in the deaths of 75% of all plant and animal species on Earth.

The crater is approximately 180 kilometers (110 miles) in diameter and 20 kilometers (12 miles) in depth, making it one of the largest known impact craters on Earth. The crater is well preserved because it is largely buried by younger sediments. However, parts of the rim and central peak are exposed in a few locations.

The crater was first identified in the 1970s by Luis and Walter Alvarez, who proposed that it was the result of an impact. It was not until the 1990s that the crater was definitively proven to be of impact origin, and its connection to the extinction event was established.

The Chicxulub Crater is a valuable scientific resource, and has been the subject of numerous scientific studies. It is also a popular tourist destination, with several tours available that allow visitors to view the exposed parts of the crater.
